Flipkart is an online retail company headquartered in Bangalore, Karnataka. Flipkart was founded in 2007 by Binny Bansal and Sachin Bansal, two alumni of IIT, Delhi. They were former employees of the e-commerce site, Amazon. Flipkart initially focused on book sales but later expanded its sales to fashion, home essentials, furniture, groceries, consumer electronics, and lifestyle products.
Flipkart initially had to compete mainly with Snapdeal. Later in 2017, Flipkart acquired a 39.5% market share in the Indian e-commerce industry. Myntra, another e-commerce company has taken over to strengthen Flipkart in the apparel segment. Later, Flipkart acquired PhonePay, a mobile payment service based on an online payment interface.
In 2018, US-based retail group Walmart acquired an 81% controlling stake in Flipkart for the US $ 16 billion.
